Evolving with Cacao

Cup of cacao and cacao seeds

Well, it looks like the modern cacao era is here! Everywhere I look on Facebook, there is an ad for Cacao.  Lots of companies are making their own unique blends too.  I haven’t tried them, but it is interesting to see this ancient ritual make this resurgence. I’m thrilled to see so many folks awakening to the magic in that warm elixir.

While I have been served cacao many times at various ceremonies, I still love the cacao I use the best. I love it so much, I took a course they offered in ceremonial cacao and obtained their certification. The experience was so much more than just a “how-to” class, it included a ton of information from a scientific and medical standpoint as well as taking me through a deep dive into the spiritual side of it.  Lots and lots of experiential learning from leading ceremonies to doing meditations and journaling explorations.

Cacao has been an integral part of my daily spiritual practice for a long time now. You can check out my prior blog posts about Cacao to hear me wax poetic about what a significant difference it has made in my life. We even have a few videos where you can watch us make cacao.  Without a shadow of a doubt, I know Cacao has been the catalyst in helping me creating the life that I love.

heart shaped cacao

What I love the most, is that is a heart opener – physically and spiritually. I love hearing how ancient cultures, and, indeed, some cultures today, still drink cacao before any important community decisions are to be made. Imagine if before Congress began its session or before a court proceeding, all the participants would stop, drink cacao and get into their heart space. How much nicer could the world be if we started everything from the heart?

As my cacao practice has matured and evolved, so have my ingredients. For a ceremonial dose, I still use water and a sweetener (I like maple syrup), but for my daily dose, I have been in loved with Unsweetened Oat Milk by Elmhurst. It is just oats and water and so it is very pure with nothing extra added and adds just the right amount of creaminess that warm my belly. I also add certain spices, for a bit of flavor and with each addition, I express gratitude for those gifts.

I still make it the same way. I heat up the oat milk in a small stainless steel pot on the stovetop, add all ingredients and use a frother when its just below the boiling point.

Julietta makes hers a little differently since she puts all her ingredients in a cup and then pours hot water over it all and then finishes with the frother. Use what works for you!

Either way, this stuff is mostly measured with the heart, so don’t stress over exact measurements. Make it to your liking and you will have a beautiful addition to your morning routine. It will feel like a vacation every day and there’s a good chance you won’t even crave coffee any longer considering the long-lasting energy, focus and creativity Cacao gives you.

Here's my Daily dose recipe:

·      Approx. 6 oz Elmhurst Unsweetened Milked Oats

·      A few dashes of:

  • Cinnamon (connection to fire element, creativity, passion, opens 3rd eye chakra)

  • Nutmeg (stimulates all higher chakras, intuition, clairvoyance, spiritual awareness)

  • Allspice (aids psychic powers, creativity, wisdom)

  • Cayenne Pepper (repels negativity, cleanses aura)

  • Vanilla Extract (balances chakras)

  • Chaga Mushroom Extract Powder (longevity, health, spiritual serenity)

·       3 Tablespoons of Embue Cacao (See our affiliate link here!)

·        2 Tablespoons of robust pure Maple Syrup

Warm it all up together and froth just before boiling. Enjoy it nice and hot – my favorite!

Last time I served this recipe to a friend, I got a “WOW! This is delicious!” Personally, I think life should be pleasurable. Even if challenging, it can still be pleasurable.

There are a million ways to add cacao to your life. Shakes, brownies, and so much more.

Enjoy your cacao time. Enjoy your life.
